				I’ve written more about motherhood than any corner of life, and that’s because it feels so profound on so many levels. For starters, when you gain a newborn, it’s a little like you lose everything else—at least for a stretch. The ability to pee when you need, or shower when you stink, or sleep when your eyes can’t stay open. At least this was my experience with Fiona, our first, who needed so much more than I thought was humanly possible to give. I felt stripped. Little by little, I was given back myself. But that self had changed. The work of loving another so deeply rewrote me.
			
					
				I was laid up pretty good with an immune response to Moderna #2. I had to stay horizontal for 24+ hours. Before the shot, I thought 24 hours of couch and TV time sounded like a dream. A vacation. But after a year of pandemic living—working from home, and managing kids through Zoom meetings, and homeschooling, and sweating mask inventory and six feet from everybody, and juggling a hundred other things we didn’t juggle before— well, it turns out I’ve gotten pretty bad at rest.
			
					
				I just got my second shot! 
			
					
				For RAISING A RARE GIRL, I’m one of those lucky writers who can actually read her Goodreads and Amazon reviews and feel good after. 				Today’s walk to school: a gorgeous, sunny, breezy, crisp morning after a night of hard rain and 7 Fiona wake-ups. There’s beauty even in the slog.

				Please forgive the exercise selfie. This one’s for a cause. I just ran a 5k in support of Rowan University’s Flying First, an initiative for first-generation college students. And our department had the largest team of runners! Because it turns out, writers also run. Those two activities are remarkably similar, now that I think about it: long stretches of low-grade discomfort peppered with moments of euphoria.
